Southern Peninsula Occupational Therapy

Helping children and families increase their participation and independence.

A holistic approach to therapy

The goal of occupational therapy is to improve skills for living in the real world, so your child can accomplish more and have a better standard of living throughout the rest of their life.
As an occupational therapist, I take a holistic approach to intervention which might include working on specific skills, enhancing strengths or coping strategies, identifying and addressing emotional or behavioural challenges, or modifying the environment or activity to support participation.
Early years establish development patterns

Early childhood intervention

During the early years of a child’s life their brain is developing at such a rapid rate that it’s an optimal time to influence their developmental trajectory. It’s also easier to establish correct developmental patterns from the start, rather than trying to modify inefficient patterns later in life. The goal is to support your child to participate fully in their lives, let’s make that happen as early as possible.

I incorporate siblings, pets, grandparents, child-care workers and kinder teachers whenever possible so that your child is having continuity across all environments and so that they have a network of people all supporting them using similar strategies.

Parents are key to learning

Family centred

For a young child, the family is the most important support system. Whilst an occupational therapist might be an expert in child development, you are the expert when it comes to your child. So as collaborators with your child’s best interests at heart, we will be equal partners in this journey.
Learning happens at home

Strength based

Support for your child doesn’t only mean working on areas of weakness or deficit. In fact it’s often more productive and enriching to make the most of your areas of strength to support areas of challenge. Those might be your child’s strengths, or they might be your strengths as a parent. We all have strengths, and I will coach you through uncovering them.

Natural environment

Your child learns best in the environment that they live, learn and play. Whether it’s your home, childcare centre, kinder or out in the community, I will come to you, so that therapy can focus on increasing participation within your child’s real-world setting.

Parents are key to learning

Parent coaching

You are your child’s best teacher, after all, you are with them every day. Being present during our sessions, I can coach you on how to support your child’s development on a daily basis. Practicing new skills frequently, during daily routines and activities will help your child progress towards their goals.

Let's work together

I love early childhood intervention because it allows me to develop a relationship with the child’s entire family. At that young age, parents are the child’s most important teachers and through a parent coaching model I will be able to provide guidance on how to support your child’s development during your daily routines and activities.
