About Amy

I chose to become an occupational therapist because I wanted to help people break down barriers and achieve their full potential.

My goal is to help your child reach his or her full potential so that they can participate fully in all parts of their life.

What is occupational therapy?

The goal of occupational therapy is to increase participation and independence in meaningful activities, or occupations. This will look different for every person because it centres around what is meaningful to you, your child and your family.

The three main occupations of childhood are play, learning and self-care, so we can work on anything that is interfering with your child’s ability to participate in these aspects of life.

That might mean:

  • Building your child’s skills in areas such as motor control, understanding emotions or sequencing steps of an activity.
  • Building your skills as a parent when it comes to understanding your child’s behaviors or how you communicate with your child.
  • Adapting the environment or activity to set your child up for success.
  • Working with other people in your child’s life such as kinder teachers, child care workers or extended family members so that everybody can support your child to be successful.

My background as an Occupational Therapist

After receiving a master’s degree in occupational therapy from Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts (2003), I spent a couple of years working at a children’s hospital and also at a paediatric private practice. I then found my true calling in the field of early childhood intervention and that is where I spent the next 10 years of my career both in Washington, DC and Melbourne.

I took a break from clinical practice to mentor other clinicians across Australia and Asia, but I am excited to get back to working with children and families again.

I can’t think of anything more rewarding than helping someone participate more fully in their own lives. That’s what occupational therapy is all about: helping people increase their participation and independence in activities that they need to or want to engage in.
